Here’s something I see in clinic more than you might expect: someone with low iron or low zinc on their blood test also has higher levels of a heavy metal like cadmium or lead. That’s not a coincidence. There’s a reason the two so often go together, and it’s called ionic mimicry.
The good news is that it works the other way too. Keeping your minerals topped up is one of the simplest ways to help your body let fewer heavy metals in.
What is ionic mimicry?
Your body can’t make minerals like iron, zinc and calcium. It has to absorb them from food, and it does that through special doors, called transporters, in the lining of your gut and on the surface of your cells. Each door is built to recognise a particular mineral by its size and electrical charge.
The trouble is that some heavy metals are close enough in size and charge to pass for a mineral. Cadmium looks a lot like iron and zinc. Lead looks a lot like calcium. So they borrow the mineral’s door and get let in. Scientists call this ionic mimicry: the toxic metal mimics the mineral (Bridges and Zalups, 2005).
The shape sorter
It’s kind of like this. Remember the shape-sorter toy every toddler has, with a circle hole, a triangle hole and a square hole? Your body is a bit like that. It has spaces shaped for each mineral: calcium fits the circle, iron fits the triangle, zinc fits the square.
Heavy metals are lookalike pieces. Lead is a fake circle that fits calcium’s space, and cadmium is a fake triangle that fits iron’s. When you have plenty of minerals, every space is already full, so there’s nowhere for the lookalikes to go. But when you’re low in minerals, there are empty spaces, and the lookalikes drop straight in. Fill up on mineral-rich plant foods, and the spaces fill with the real thing again. It’s not exactly like this scientifically, but it’s an easy way to understand it.
